Maine Chaigneau
“Cuvée JS”
Chateau Maine Chaigneau is a family estate of 7.80 ha on 3 different appellations, Lalande de Pomerol, Montagne Saint-Emilion and Vin de France. In the early 1900s, my great-grandfather Maurice Courty left the Dordogne to cultivate vines in the Libournais and met Cécile there. After some purchases of vines and land in Néac and Montagne, he created Château Lafleur Châtain. Work on other properties has allowed it to expand. After working on the property my grandparents Marie-Thérèse and Robert Courty took over in 1960. They are committed to growing and prospering the property by starting to develop bottled sales to individuals. In 1985, the property was shared between their three children, my father Serge Courty and his two sisters. That same year my parents Joëlle and Serge created Château Maine Chaigneau. Little by little, when they stopped working, they bought up some plots from my grandparents’s property. After a few years of trying and hesitating, they created the Cuvée JS in 2008. In 2011, one of my aunts ceasing her activity, I bought part of her vines which I made available to the château. In 2012 they created L’EARL Vignobles Courty to prepare for the transfer, in 2014 I started working on the estate. In 2014, we integrated the Bordeaux wines EMS to limit and control our impact on the environment. In 2017 I became manager of the company, that same year we obtained the HVE certification (high environmental value). For the year 2021 we have a new one which converts to organic farming.

The owner's pitch.
“We make it a point of honor to work with respect for the environment, using as few inputs as possible. Our wines are therefore produced with respect for the terroir. To complete our approach, we have decided to convert the vineyard to organic farming in 2021.”

Wines.
This cuvée is produced from 3 plots that we have selected on different terroirs. We replanted 2 of them in order to have a higher density of plants. We do a more severe thinning to obtain richer grapes. With these reduced yields we obtain a powerful wine, rich in velvety and delicate tannins.
• Planting density: 7,500 vines per hectare
• Yields: 45 hl hectare
• Ageing: 100% new barrels
• Grapes: 100% Merlot
• Harvest: Manual
