Chateau de Villegeorge

Appellation : Haut-Medoc

The Château de Villegeorge wines were highly sought after as early on as the 18th century, to the extent that they fetched prices equal to those of wines that would be classified as 3rd growths in 1855.I When a group of Bordeaux wine merchants established the Crus Bourgeois classification in 1932 only six were awarded the coveted title of Cru Exceptionnel, among them Château Villegeorge. Its classification was re-confirmed in 1966.The fine quality of the deep gravelly soils did not go unnoticed by Lucien Lurton who acquired the domain in 1973 and began to bring it to life again. In 1992, when he divided his châteaux among his children, Mr Lurton put Villegeorge in the capable hands of his daughter Marie-Laure, a qualified oenologist, who had already been in charge of the vinification since 1986. In 2003, Château Villegeorge was granted Terra Vitis status for adhering to the strict rules and standards set for integrated production methods.

The owner's pitch.

“I was deeply involved in the production of our family’s wines from 1986 and was fortunate to take over two of those properties from my father in 1992. Today I am supported by a competent team that is dedicated and knows how to adapt to every task required. The quality of a harvest demands constant adapting throughout the production chain in order to produce the best wine possible every year, all the while remaining true to our values regarding sustainable development. Creating balanced wines that show perfectly ripe fruit supported by elegant tannins is our aim every vintage.”

Wines.

Villegeorge has produced wines that age gracefully since its beginnings. Today the 2006 and 2008 are perfect; the ripe, round tannins have kept an element of their original power but the complex aromas of truffle, violet and liquorice are showing elegantly. These wines would be perfect with roast poultry, queen scallops with truffles or boletus mushrooms, or an aged Parmesan. The latest vintages, 2015, 2016 and 2018 still show firm tannins and require breathing before drinking. They will be great companions for roast lamb, a succulent steak or a fricassee of girolle mushrooms…
