Château Haut-Chaigneau

Appellation : Lalande-de-Pomerol

Located in the commune of Néac, at the crossroads of the great appellations of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, stands an extraordinary 30-hectare property: Château Haut-Chaigneau. Various vintages are vinified there, including the wine of the same name: Château Haut-Chaigneau. Vignobles Chatonnet cultivate the best grape varieties: Merlot for roundness and fleshiness, Cabernet Franc for finesse and complexity and Malbec for power and aromatic intensity, which are declined through several Crus, each with its own style and identity.

The owner's pitch

“In order to make great wines, one must first and foremost seek out what is at the origin of the identity of the place. This identity is difficult to define because it is based on a complex combination of parameters commonly called the Terroir. First and foremost, the soil and climate are obviously involved, but also and above all, man! Vinification, then maturation, and finally blending and packaging are all aimed at avoiding the deviations that can develop when Man forgets his role as Author.
For Pascal Chatonnet, most of the work begins in the vineyard but continues at all stages.

The wine.

Château Haut-Chaigneau* is a judicious blend of Merlot Noir and Cabernet Franc from different types of terroir, all of which are on mollasse but more or less gravelly with the presence of iron crasse typical of the appellation. The quality of the terroirs exploited, a traditional and environmentally friendly cultivation for many years and in conversion to organic farming, the balance of the grape varieties associated with a particularly careful vinification and maturation have made it possible to produce one of the most renowned and award-winning Bordeaux wines of the region, notably recognised for its finesse and elegance and its superb development during bottle ageing.

*The name of the vineyard is “Haut” because it is located on the highest point of the plateau of “Chaigneau” or “Chagneau”, an old French word derived from the Latin “Castanea” meaning the presence of an oak (or chestnut) forest in the Middle Ages at this location.
